Several years ago during the early days of the worldwide web it seemed almost impossible to reason with the eventual success of the internet. Today we are in the throes of the next stages of fast developing; ground breaking social networking which has been a direct offshoot of the internet revolution. There really isn’t one day that goes by where a new feature, attraction tool hasn’t been incorporated on to the major social online community sites.

In many walks of life and across many different professions, social networks now have a significant role to play, none more so than in the field of online gaming. Many games platforms through some clever and psychologically appreciative graphics not only introduce the player to the game but also offer an interactive facility to entice and encourage competition from others.

The easy to sue icons of the major social bookmark and networking sites are ready to hand and a gamer is only a couple of clicks away from bringing friends and most of their address book on to the platform if they should so wish.

The major betting agencies, games and lottery platforms have developed these features dramatically in recent years. Two good examples of this are Coral UK and VWD through their e-lottery syndicate platform. Interaction and manual dexterity have a very close relationship which seems odd but on closer examination is a very pertinent point.

Given the number of people who text , compute e-mails it doesn’t really take too long to establish that the technological revolution and its acceleration goes hand in hand with the usage put on peoples’ ability to use quick moving technology. The major social networking sites and the understanding of age demography in relation to generation x and generation y individuals provides the background to online games and lottery sites. The understanding they have of peoples’ tastes and aspirations for communication and information gathering governs the way in which they promote and attract players.

The comparison of older style networks with the modern day entourage is a stark one. It often makes me smile to think of the older versions and the time and effort exerted just to participate. Equally, I feel a little embarrassed when the cutting edge modern technology we have doesn’t move fast enough. Being able to instantly introduce friends without any dialogue, just a few clicks, again is astonishing and that makes me smile as well.

In summary, social networking sites, games and lottery platforms are panaceas of new technology and internet wisdom. They are certainly the places where the new and attractive can be found. It is also a place where social networks and communities link in to each other and provide the makings of newer far reaching development. May be in a few years time I’ll look back and have another smile and wonder what the next dimension will bring. Will it ever stop? probably not, just continue in the new directions which are presented. The world wide web is ever changing, ever developing and in reality continually unique.

Social networking is something that many people are into nowadays. Young or old, technically-savvy or not, people have turned to social networking to get in touch with people and to re-acquaint themselves with long lost relatives or friends. Others use social networks for businesses, especially in terms of generating interest among probable customers and business associates. So, how can one maximize the use of social networking for his business? There are many ways of effectively utilizing social networks, but some of the proven and most reliable are the following:

* Get to know the social media network that you are into. Who are the typical users of the network? If the social networking site caters more to the younger crowd, the products or services that you offer must be something that the young market can appreciate.

* Social networks have different tools that its members can use anytime they log in to the site. These applications allow users to interact with each other in ways dependent on the applications or tools. Applications like games allow users to connect with each other while playing the game.

Social Networking - Show Me the Money!

Last week I talked in very general terms about social networking but what exactly is it and the question I hear most often, why do I, as a design professional, need to be doing this? Are my clients really hanging out online and when will I see the benefits to my business? In other words, “show me the money”!

To understand the benefits of social networking, let’s first understand what it is. Social networking is simply just the practice of expanding the number of one’s business and/or social contacts by making connections through individuals. This practice has been around as long as people have been in business and interacted in social circles. The Internet has expanded the potential for people to reach out and make connections for both business and social purposes. Through social media, we now have the tools to connect with other people online and expand our social network. Online social networking is still in its infancy, with the first site, Friendster only being introduced in 2002, followed by MySpace a year later and Facebook in 2004. There is still much to learn about this new way of social interaction and its true impact as a business marketing application but the statistics show people are joining social networks at steadily increasing rates and this phenomenon is here to stay.

Let’s now talk about the statistics. Who is online and are they our potential customers?

The market research firm Nielsen Claritas just came out with some compelling statistics. Their report (released Sept. 25, 2009) showed that more and more affluent and urban people are joining the social networking scene. In addition, they found almost 23 percent of Facebook users earn more than $100,000 a year compared to only 16 percent of MySpace users. Users of Facebook are also more likely to use LinkedIn, with almost 38% of LinkedIn users earning more than $100,000 per year. Clearly, this report showed that the affluent consumer is getting online. But how often are they? Nielsen reported that “about half of the U.S. population visited a social networking website in the last year and that number grows every quarter.” While Nielsen didn’t find any strong demographic differences in the blogging and tweeting community at large, they did find that bloggers and tweeters tend to live in urban areas such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago with the highest penetration rates in Blogger, Wordpress and Twitter.

Do these statistics translate to sales for us? In terms of an immediate and direct return on investment, not necessarily but as they say in the real estate business, it’s location, location, location that sells. Marketing 101 is to know who your potential client is and then go to where they are and clearly the affluent are joining the social networking trend. Social networking can’t be viewed as a quick fix marketing strategy and cannot and should not be used as a direct selling tool. It’s about making connections and developing long-term relationships with business partners as well as potential clients. It’s soft marketing - being in front of your potential clients and giving them an opportunity to know like and trust you so when they need to decorate or know of someone who does, you are top of mind. You are building relationships that you can leverage in the future. Your presence on a social networking site over time will translate to increased sales if you use these sites consistently and correctly. Next week, we’ll go into which sites we need to be on as well as develop a plan to use these sites efficiently so social networking doesn’t consume our day. After all, it’s all about getting back to the business of design!

Assignment:

The first step in social networking is listening and becoming familiar with the landscape of the various social media sites. Continue with last week’s assignment in setting up a Facebook account if you don’t already have one. Visit social media sites (blogs, Facebook groups, websites) related to your specific interests in the design field. For example, there are blogs devoted to sustainable design, color, style - the topics are truly endless. Google your favorite designers and they probably will have an online presence in some manner, be it blogging, tweeting or Facebook. Make note of which sites you like and tend to spend more time on. Notice the personalities each site has. Follow their blogs and join their Facebook groups to see how they’re using it to communicate with their fan/friend base. Make a commitment to spend 10-20 minutes a day following the sites you’ve selected.

Hundreds of social networking sites have a wide range of membership, including kids and teens. If your kids are one of millions site members, take part in their quest so they would not fall into the hands of sexual predators and other unsafe happenings. From the start, tell your kids which personal details could only be made public. If you do not warn them about this, they may slip off very personal information, like your home location, number, social security number and financial data, to strangers.

You could also suggest that they use fake names in creating their screen name. This is to make sure that they are not giving away too much about themselves. Assist your kids in being familiarized with security settings available in the social networking site they are interested in being a member.

In creating their profiles, you should tell them that the social networking site they chose must allow them to be themselves, to express their personality. They should put in only the information they are comfortable sharing as many people would view their page - from personal friends to college staff and future employers.

Technological advancements today have allowed even more convenient usage of the Internet. You could access the World Wide Web through a cellular phone. One way you could monitor or limit their Internet access to buy them a phone that has no connectivity. Besides, phones should be mainly used for text messaging and calling.

Another thing you need to be cautious of is that even in cyberspace, your kids are still susceptible to being bullied. One way of cyber intimidation is through spreading destructive rumors and sinister messages. Some kids who were gravely affected by these have taken their own lives. To avoid this happening to your own kids, monitor their activities regularly.

Nothing beats having an open communication. If they tell you they are currently having such problems within the site they are a member of, tell them to leave the site, delete their account and be a member in another site. You could also advise them to be more cautious next time in making friends.

Another danger your kids may face in these sites is being objects of sexual predation. It would be much more comfortable if they would learn about it directly from you so early on, they could protect themselves too. If they have been subjected to harassment, tell them it is best to immediately report the incident to the police and site administrators so the offender could be banned.

To make sure that your kids have not been involved in any mishaps, type in their name through blog sites and search engines. When nothing alarming appears, then they are secured enough. Safety of your kids is one of parenting musts. As parents and breadwinners of the family, being with them every single moment could not be possible. However, there are still ways to keep an eye on them until their independence time comes.

You do not also have to worry too much as the social networking sites have safeguarding measures. These networking sites have privacy policies and settings. All you have to do is learn how to maximize the usage of these features so you could be assured that your kids are safe within the site.
